Residents say stretch of Bastrop Co. roadway dangerous
06:45 PM CST on Friday, November 23, 2007
A multi-vehicle chain reaction accident in Bastrop County injured more than a dozen people. Some of those hurt are children.
The Thanksgiving night crash was actually two separate accidents. The first involved two vehicles around 11:30 p.m. A few minutes later another car went off the road after driving up on the crash scene.
This is a remote part of Bastrop County, near Cedar Creek, about a mile east from Highway 21. Extra ambulance crews were called in from Austin to help care for the 14 people who were injured -- two with life threatening injuries. Six were seriously hurt. The others escaped with minor injuries.
Names are not being released at this time, but we do know that one of the two children brought to the Dell Children’s Medical Center was in critical condition.
There are a lot of unanswered questions about this holiday crash. Scattered in a ditch along FM 812, you can still find evidence of the collision that happened there. But even if you didn’t notice all the broken glass and shards of metal lying around, it’s easy to tell the intersection of FM 812 and Old San Antonio road is a dangerous spot.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all,” said Shona Mercer, a Cedar Creek resident who almost lost her life on this roadway.
“I’ve already totaled one car, it can be dangerous, out there if you are not paying attention to the road and certain signs on the road and how it turns and winds and how people pass you out here,” said Mercer. "I didn’t know about it, but I’m very sorry for all the families. If you are new to the area out here, and you don’t know it, you can have a lot of bad accidents out here."
FM 812 is an old Texas roadway. It was originally known as the Austin-Port Lavaca Stagecoach Rd. It now runs only 21 miles and is limited to Travis and Bastrop counties.
