Isabel Wallace’s son was kidnapped three years ago in Mexico City. When police failed to investigate, his mother did it herself.  She used credit card bills, cell phone records and cell phone antennas to map out the route Hugo Wallace took when he disappeared while on a date.

One of the women in the kidnapping ring lured the victim up a flight of stairs and down a short hallway to a small apartment. It's now sealed as evidence. Once inside, Hugo Wallace fought back and he was severely beaten.

“We received a picture of my brother naked and all beaten up,” said Claudia Wallace, Hugo’s sister.  “But my mother and I jumped for joy on getting some news (of my brother.)"

Hugo’s family believed it was proof of life.  The kidnappers demanded a ransom for the businessman, but then broke off negotiations.

“(My mother) told me, ‘We have to fight and we have to make this public’,” said Claudia.

The family put up billboards and offered rewards.

Tips led to the capture of several suspects, including a woman who fled to the United States.  Mrs. Wallace found the alleged kidnapping ring leader by following his lover.  He pulled a gun, and Mrs. Wallace’s brother tackled the man.

Police patrolling the area took the suspect, a former state police officer, into custody.

The arrests would bring heartbreaking news.  The woman who lured Hugo Wallace to the apartment building confessed he died that night from the beating.

“He was a good man,” said Claudia of her brother.  “He was the best father. He was a working man. He enjoyed playing (soccer).”

Mrs. Wallace vows her son’s kidnapping won’t be just another statistic in Mexico.  She’s seeking justice and helping other families do the same.

“Last June, somebody tried to shoot her and my seven-year-old was with her,” said Claudia.

These days, Isabel Wallace rides in a bulletproof car with police as bodyguards.  But this mother is not backing down.
