Restaurant's opening signals Austin's growth

It's another sure sign Austin is surviving the national economic crisis. A new downtown restaurant just opened. "Maria, Maria La Cantina" is owned by the legendary musician, Carlos Santana.
The artwork on the walls, the ambiance -- even the flare used to ignite special drinks -- are all elements influenced by Santana.
Monday night, the legendary musician came to Austin to officially open his fourth franchise, which features his taste in true Mexican cuisine.
"We're really passionate about teaching Mexican-Americans who grew up in here what real Mexican food is about," Santana said.
"Austin as a city has grown by 8 percent over the last two years and that alone, I think, is going to drive more restaurants to open," said Laura Kelso, food and restaurant critic, who tracks trends in dining for Austin Monthly magazine. She says Santana's new venture will have to offer more than his celebrity ownership to succeed.
"I know that Maria, Maria's ambiance is spectacular and I think that's going to be a draw but ultimately it's going to be, 'What am I getting on this plate?'" said Kelso.
The quality of the food on the plate will make or break the success of the restaurant. Success, in turn will also allow Santana to fulfill his dream of creating jobs and opportunities for others.
"We're all in this together. We don't leave anybody out and when I see places like this I am very honored. To me it's another blessing," he said.
It's a commitment he shares personally with each employee of "Maria, Maria La Cantina,"
You're talking about a legend. Carlos Santana has inspired so many and he's been inspired by so many," said Tre Dotson of Dudum Sports & Entertainment, managing partner of the restaurant says.
There are plans to open more restaurants including one in Houston and in Las Vegas.
