WW2 Veterans honored in reenactment
11:32 PM CST on Saturday, November 10, 2007
Veteran's Day is Monday, but festivities were held all weekend for those who served this country.
One of the biggest here was a World War II reenactment at Camp Mabry.
The show offers a glimpse at the sort of fights and firearms soldiers of old may have faced.
Dozens of volunteers portray infantry, medics, machine gun crews, and more in "Close Assault 1944."
Hundreds of spectators got a closer glimpse at the action.
Brian Alexander enjoys collecting the gear and putting on these shows, and says it's one way to make sure the past is not forgotten. "We do this not to glorify war; it's simply to remember history, let people see what actually see what happened what went on."
The crowd gets to see what weapons each side had at its disposal and what they went through during a battle. This reenactment illustrates an attack against a German strongpoint. The volunteers who donned the uniform of days gone by want people to understand that this part of American history is more than just black and white photos and classroom lectures.
The reenactment was sponsored by the Texas Military Forces Museum. "Close Assault 1944" will play again Sunday at Camp Mabry with performances at 11 am and 2 pm. Admission and parking are free.
