Mayor to call for downtown rail system

10:54 AM CDT on Thursday, October 25, 2007

KVUE News

Austin Mayor Will Wynn will announce plans for a downtown passenger rail system.

According to his office, the mayor will make a call for action at the Downtown Austin Alliance luncheon at noon Thursday.

Officials say the rail scenario will connect Austin's airport, downtown and the University of Texas. It's also expected to run through the Triangle district and nearby developments in North Austin.

The mayor will be asking for an election in 2008 to approve the rail system. Until then, his office says the mayor will call for a task force that will begin working on the technicalities of the rail way.

The task force will focus on a variety of issues -- from ground concerns to the types of cars on the rail system.
