The Austin Police Department Tuesday accepted a grant that will be used to buy new technology for training officers.
U.S. Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas, District 10) presented the $210,443 grant. Part of the money will purchase a second driving simulator for the APD Training Academy, which will help officers learn to become more skilled at multi-tasking in their vehicles.
Other funds will go toward weapons and computers.
Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo says training is key to keeping the community and officers safe.
"As a result of this funding, we will be better-positioned to keep Austin one of the safest cities moving forward," Acevedo said.
"Public safety is the top priority of any community," said McCaul. "We want Austin's first responders who are on the front lines fighting crime on our streets to have the best technology available for training at their disposal."
