Austin's police chief stood by his statements Thursday concerning the downtown Austin location of the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH).

Police Chief Art Acevedo says the location -- ARCH sits just a block away from the 6th Street entertainment district -- gives homeless people with addiction problems easy access to liquor and drugs.

"I believe that a lot of those folks at the ARCH want help. They want to get back on their feet. In order to do that, you have to remove them from temptation. Why would you put them right by the bar district with alcohol at every corner and every other establishment?" said Chief Acevedo.

The chief wants the city to look at moving the center.

"I think it's something we need to discuss. I don't think it will happen overnight," said Chief Acevedo.

ARCH has been in the downtown area for nearly five years. It serves 400 to 600 people a day.
