Restaurants offer Texas-grown produce for state effort
11:10 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 1, 2008
Texas state officials want Texans to dine out Wednesday on locally-produced food and help feed the hungry at the same time.
Select restaurants will offer special Texas-grown menu items during Wednesday's statewide Go Texan Restaurant Round-up. Restaurants included in the program will offer dishes made with locally-grown products.
More than 200 restaurants across Texas have signed up to participate in the program.
"The whole idea behind the restaurant program was bringing local restaurants together with local producers and wine-makers from all across the state. And the local folks from town could come in and enjoy all that fresh [and] ready-to-eat. That's the main purpose of bringing them all together," said Gene Richards, Texas Department of Agriculture.
Many restaurants are donating a portion of the day's proceeds to local food banks.
