It happened at a condominium construction site at 17th and Lavaca in downtown Austin Monday afternoon.

Officials say the worker fell 25 to 30 feet, hit a partitioned wall and landed in a narrow opening.

"He went over backwards and hit the partition wall we have between the cement wall, where we're pouring more cement, and he fell backwards onto that and then bounced off and hit the pavement down below," said Walt Chapman, construction worker. "We had 15 guys calling 911, and they responded real good... he was pretty messed up."

The construction worker had to be rescued from the work site after his fall.

Emergency crews used a crane to lift him out of the site and gave him oxygen.

The worker suffered multiple fractures and was rushed to Brackenridge Hospital for treatment. Officials say he may have landed on rebar coming out of the concrete and his injuries are critical.

His identity was not released.
