Two University of Texas chemical engineering professors received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation during a White House ceremony Monday.

President Bush presented the award to Adam Heller for his contributions to electrochemistry and bioelectrochemistry. The White House said the application of his work in the development of technological products improved quality of life across the globe, especially for human health and well-being.

Bush also presented the award to Carlton Grant Willson for the creation of lithographic imaging materials and techniques that have enabled the manufacturing of smaller, faster, and more efficient microelectronic components. Officials said the technology improved the competitiveness of the U.S. microelectronics industry.

According to UT officials, it's rare for two people from the same institution and department to be recognized for two separate discoveries.

Heller and Wilson were among eight recipients.
