They said it was the result of an investigation of one of Mexico's most notorious drug cartels.

A 15-month investigation resulted in the arrests of 175 suspects yesterday and today, 22 of them in North Texas.

Local law enforcement agencies also seized $1 million in cash, more than 650 pounds of cocaine and 400 pounds of methamphetamines, along with 20 weapons and various explosive devices.

They said taking so many drugs off the street would force their price up.

Nationwide, Project Reckoning has led to more than 500 arrests and the seizure of $60 million and more than 40 tons of drugs, U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey announced today.

Those indicted include three alleged leaders of the Gulf cartel: Ezequiel Cardenas-Guillen, Heriberto Lazcano-Lazcano (right) and Jorge Eduardo Costilla-Sanchez.

"We successfully completed a hard-hitting, coordinated and massive assault on the powerful and extremely violent Gulf Cartel," said Michele M. Leonhart, acting administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration. "We have arrested U.S. cell heads, stripped the cartel of $60 million in cash, imprisoned their brutal assassins and significantly disrupted their U.S. infrastructure. DEA will continue our relentless attack against this cartel, aiming to dismantle them and stop the violence they inflict on Southwest Border communities."

The international investigation was centered in Atlanta, but attorneys in the Northern District of Texas are handling some of the cases.
