Man claims his Texas-made aftershave ignited

08:22 AM CDT on Thursday, September 13, 2007

Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- A man who suffered burns during a Wisconsin Dells camping trip is suing a Texas company that makes his aftershave -- which he says ignited.

Eighty-one-year-old Charles Lewitzke of Milwaukee was camping in 2004.

After cleaning up at a bathhouse, he put on some Brut (BROOT) aftershave and deodorant. Then he went to his campsite to start a fire.

The suit says the elderly man struck a match -- and he ignited, suffering second- and third-degree burns to 30 percent of his body.

The suit filed in Milwaukee seeks unspecified damages from:

-- Helen of Troy Limited of El Paso, which owns and markets Brut

-- Unilever Home & Personal Care USA of New Jersey, a division of Conopco, which had previously owned the product.

-- and Wal-Mart Stores East, which is where he bought the Brut products.

A lawyer for the defendants declined comment.
