Contentious CAMPO meeting held at the Capitol
10:33 PM CDT on Monday, September 10, 2007
Get ready for even more toll roads in Central Texas. The Capitol Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) is expected to approved more toll roads when they vote on the issue next month.
CAMPO meetings have a reputation for their “lively” discussions – often fueled by opponents of toll roads. So with the next round of toll ways coming up for a vote next month, Monday night’s meeting didn’t disappoint. Hundreds packed the Capitol Auditorium for one last chance to speak out several key proposed toll ways.
One of the most controversial proposals calls for an elevated toll at the “Y” in Oak Hill. It’s opposed by the group, “Fix290.org”, which supports a ground-level parkway design.
Four other major tolls are also being proposed, including U.S. 183 south from Interstate 35 to the airport; State Highway 71 west from Riverside Drive; U.S. 290 to State Highway 130; and State Highway 45 from Mopac to FM 1625 in southwest Austin.

Monday night's CAMPO meeting was held at the Capitol Auditorium.
Four of the five major toll proposals already have existing roads. The tolls would add additional lanes in those cases, while keeping the access roads free.
The CAMPO board will vote on the proposed toll roads on October 8.
