Catherine Destasio, with Second Street District, said, “We're providing everything someone would need to live and work downtown.”

But as business grows, the downtown destination is also attracting criminals.

Toni Simone owns Girls Next Door.  It was broken into early Friday Morning.

“I'm concerned about my employees that are working here about their safety,” said Simone.

This week, there have been six smash and grab burglaries in the Second Street District, even though some stores had alarms and surveillance cameras.

In August, there were four separate but similar smash and grab burglaries at other small businesses, including The Leaf restaurant on Second Street.

Police say the smash and grabs are not happening exclusively in the Second Street District but throughout the city. Investigators believe all the break-ins are related and are being committed by one person.

So far, witnesses have described a white male leaving in a Ford sedan.

“White male 6-foot to 6-foot-1, slender in build, lanky,” said APD Detective David Espinoza of the suspect.

Destasio said the spate of smash and grab burglaries hasn't affected new companies from locating to the area.

“We feel we're doing really well our customers are coming we're signing addition leases we have over 50 leases in 2nd Street District,” she said.

Friday, Kirk, a new gallery, opened its doors.

“Second Street is where Austin's future retail is happening,” said owner Jeff Kirk.

While he is concerned, he doesn't think he'll be targeted.

“All are purchases are made by credit card,” he said.

Police aren't taking any chances they are beefing up their presence by adding extra bicycle patrols.

The Second Street District, along with the Austin Police Department and the Downtown Alliance,  will be holding a crime prevention work shop for business owners Tuesday morning.
