Man accused of trying to run down officer outside Burger King
01:50 PM CDT on Monday, August 25, 2008
A man faces charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer and evading arrest after authorities say he tried to run down an officer in his car during an incident outside a Burger King in Williamson County.
It happened Friday at the fast-food restaurant on Highway 183.
According to court documents, Burger King employees called Austin police to report a man who was spitting, yelling at employees, trying to take a dining room chair and then showing off a knife in his car.
When an APD officer arrived, the man was already in his car and drove toward the officer, forcing the officer to jump out of the way.
Williamson County officers were called in as backup. They tried to stop the man, but he refused to stop. Finally, a spike strip was thrown down on Spicewood Springs Road and the car's front tire was deflated, forcing it to stop near Yaupon Drive.
Douglas Mark Vandervoort, 62, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and evading in a motor vehicle.
