08:17 AM CDT on Monday, August 18, 2008
HOUSTON -- Tropical Storm Fay, our sixth named storm of the season, has already proven to be deadly. Floods have killed five people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
A 34-year old woman drowned when a family tried to cross a swollen river in a car in Santo Domingo. Rescuers found the bodies of her missing 13-year-old niece and 5-year-old nephew.
In Haiti, a man also died while trying to cross a river.
As of Sunday evening, the storm was passing through Cuba. Fay is dumping a lot of rain on the island. People who live in sparsely populated, low lying communities have been evacuted as there are worries the storm could set off strong surges, flooding and mudslides.
Florida's governor Charlie Crist has declared a state of emergency as the storm threatens to strike the state possibly late on Monday or early Tuesday.

Officials have ordered all visitors to evacuate. A stream of cars has been making its way back to the mainland since early Sunday morning.
