A state of the art housing project for seniors has opened in South Austin, and it's one of the greenest buildings in town.

The City View at the Park apartments received a 4-star green building rating and is said to be a national model for energy efficiency. The development was built for residents 55 and older.

John Land and his partner Pat were some of the first to move in. He said the low energy bills are just part of the attraction.

"I think we lucked into a jewel... it's really great and a lovely place to live," he said.

Recycled construction materials were used for building throughout the four-story complex.

"As our city ages demographically, we are going to need a lot more projects just like City View," said Will Wynn, Austin mayor.

The goal was to build the most energy efficient and affordable housing for some of Austin's older residents.
