Officials: Pipe installation delayed Cesar Chavez completion
06:27 PM CDT on Friday, July 25, 2008
A $7 million project to turn Cesar Chavez Street into a two-way street through downtown Austin is running two months behind schedule, but project managers say the delay has been caused by additions to the project.
The five block stretch between Brazos and San Antonio used to be one way, but it is being switched back for traffic to go both ways.
The project manager tells KVUE News it's a very complicated job because there is so much pedestrian and vehicle traffic here, but he also said the City of Austin decided to add to some storm water drainage pipes under the road.
The pipes were scheduled to go in sometime it the next two years, but since the road was already torn up, officials decided it made sense to install the pipes now.
"Not including that storm sewage drain would have resulted in possibly cutting Cesar Chavez in the next two years, and we didn't want to do that just after reconstructing it," said Rick Colbrunn, project manager.
Cesar Chavez near the Congress Avenue Bridge was expected to be closed Saturday for paving. The bridge will also be closed.
The rest of the paving will take place the following Saturday. The road should open to traffic somewhere around the second week of August.
The remaining sidewalks and esplanade should be complete in early September.
