Troopers investigating skimming ring

Devices used to steal your credit card number are showing up in the Austin area. Just last week, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers say they found one in a man's car. They're afraid he's part of a much bigger operation.
Criminals don't need your credit card anymore. One quick swipe is enough. Crooks use a "skimming device" to store your account number.
"It's a scary thing out there," said Detective James Mason, Austin Police Department.
State troopers found a "skimmer" in a traffic stop last week.
According to a search warrant, it could be tied to a crime ring troopers are currently investigating. They say criminals are using skimming devices to copy credit card numbers, and then programming gift cards to buy diesel fuel.
"It's convenient where the credit card's not monitored," Mason said.
Mason says APD is dealing with similar cases. Criminals will either attach devices onto machines with a credit card reader like an ATM, or do something similar to what happened at Zax Pints and Plates in 2006. A waiter skimmed customers' cards at check out.
Mason has this advice: Use cash, and if you must use a card, use the credit option instead of debit and check your bank statement often.
"Make sure it's actually the amount you authorized. We actually had an individual here in Austin who would punch in an additional amount," Mason said.
