A former UT football player wants to get back on the team. Andre Jones and Robert Joseph plead guilty last month to a 2007 robbery. Joseph is suspended from the horns indefinitely, but Jones' attorney says there's hope for him.

Andre Jones is serving time for participating in a robbery with former teammate Robert Joseph at a Southeast Austin apartment complex.

"It's a pretty hefty sentence that's over his head right now," Assistant District Attorney Clinton Butler said.

Jones appeared before a Travis County judge Monday for his official sentencing -- 30 days in jail, 10 years deferred adjudication and 340 hours of community service. His record remains intact, but that's only if he follows a list of rules. For example, he must give routine urine samples, do outpatient therapy for drug use and keep a 2.0 grade point average.

"Should he not meet any of those conditions or commit another crime, the judge can sentence him from two to 20 years in prison," Butler said.

Jones remains on scholarship and since he wasn't convicted of the crime, Attorney Ariel Payan thinks Jones will remain that way. Payan also thinks Jones can make a return to the football team.

"He's hoping UT will pick him up and he can go out and play and show his abilities," Payan said.

It will be up to the coaching staff to give him a second chance. Assistant District Attorney Clinton Butler seems to think there is possible rehabilitation for Jones.

"The ultimate goal here is to get this kid to be a good young man and right now we don't think he is," Butler said.

There is still no plea deal for Joseph. The judge expressed concern about rumors of gang affiliation. She said Joseph had the tattoo markings of a 'Bloods' gang member. Joseph left the courtroom in handcuffs for a warrant out of Southeast Texas but still with hopes of playing football for a college in Kilgore.
