Grass fires break out across Central Texas
01:35 PM CDT on Sunday, July 6, 2008
Grass fires break out across central Texas, making this a busy day for area firefighters.
The brittle central Texas grass and dry weather combined to make plenty of fuel for the flames.
Firefighters were able to get a quick handle on a grassfire in east Travis County as it jumped over Johnson road outside of Manor.
"I mean even though the vegetation looks green, it's just amazing how quick that it catches," said Sgt. Gordon Dye, a Travis county sheriff's deputy.
It's believed a downed electrical line may have sparked the Manor fire.
Luckily no one was hurt and homeowners weren't forced to leave.
In west Austin another grassfire, this one caused by fireworks and did force some evacuations.
Like the situation in Manor, dry conditions called for quick action.
"It doesn't take much to ignite the grass on fire, and the grass then spreads to the bigger vegetation on fire," said Mike Elliot, assistant fire chief with the Westlake and Oak Hill fire department.
The west Austin homes were partially evacuated - those away from home were asked to stay away while anyone still inside their homes had to stay put.
By mid afternoon residents were allowed back home.
