Fired APD commander speaks at hearing
11:49 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 2, 2008
An appeals hearing continued for the second day for fired APD Commander Larry Oliver.
Oliver took the stand Wednesday morning to appeal his firing. He was indefinitely suspended for allegations of not reporting a discriminatory comment about another officer and insubordination for speaking to that officer about his punishment before it was finalized.
Oliver doesn't dispute that he should've reported the comment. What Oliver is upset about is why he got a 30-day suspension and the officer who said the discriminatory comment got only 20 days.
With such a long suspension, the commanders had no ability to appeal. Oliver chose to be fired so he could hold this appeal hearing.
"I don't see officers worry whether somebody got five days or eight days as much as if people in a higher rank are held to a lesser standard," said Rick Hinkle, APD commander.
Oliver did not report the discriminatory comment to a higher ranking officer, but he did discuss it with a lower ranking officer.
"I think he thought if he told me that I would tell somebody else. Honestly, I think that's why he told me," said Lt. Deborah Sawyer, APD.
Sawyer and another female officer who spoke Wednesday morning say they don't blame Oliver. They say there is discrimination against lesbians from other officers at the academy.
