Hutto residents fighting back against proposed landfill expansion
05:50 PM CDT on Sunday, June 22, 2008
Residents in Hutto are fighting back against a proposed expansion to the city landfill.
The problem stems from a potential expansion plan that would bring in trash from places outside of Williamson County.
Already the Williamson County Landfill takes in about 600 tons of solid waste every. Now a deal in the works between Waste Management of Texas and the City of Killeen could mean even more trash piling into the landfill.
Waste management estimates that deal could bring in about 100,000 extra tons of waste every year. That could lead to another expansion.
Residents who live nearby say the landfill has already grown enough over the years, and are worried another expansion and more trash will only hurt their property values.
“I don’t see how it could get any bigger,” said Shaylena Fulton, who lives near the landfill. “It scares me because we’re trying to improve our place here and make it a nice, comfortable place for us to live, but we’re scared to put money into the place because we don’t know what’s going to happen with that and we don’t want to live here it’s going to get bigger. It’s already a big, nasty smelling thing.”
On Thursday, the Hutto City Council announced its opposition of the expansion of the county landfill too. Council members will meet with county commissioners to see what steps can be taken.
A public meeting will be held for citizens to talk about their own concerns.
