Angry and sometimes insulting language was hurled at city leaders Thursday night at a meeting in east Austin.

At issue -- a controversial plan the city approved in April to build a homeless RV park in the middle of their community.

Outside True Light Baptist Church in east Austin, council member Mike Martinez got an earful.

"This is an absolute disgrace," said Morris Priest, an upset homeowner.

He wasn't alone. Outraged neighbors turned out for the informational meeting with community and city leaders.

Council member Martinez lives about a mile away from the planned homeless community and assures his neighbors it will be safe.

"If this doesn't turn out to be a good thing for this community and my neighborhood, we will be the first ones to dismantle it and move it somewhere else," he said.

But trying to convince his neighbors is going to be an uphill battle.

"The only thing that matters is getting rid of the people who live downtown and moving them over here so the people who want to buy their 250 thousand dollar home can do it without any problems at all," said Cauleen Smith.

Smith and her neighbors worry about their children's safety, quality of life and property values saying the homeless will have to walk through their neighborhood to the only bus stop.

"They will be walking up our street past my daughter and past your daughter and that is not acceptable," she said.

But leaders say they are willing to listen to concerns.

Nothing appears to have been solved. Neighbors are more determined than ever to take legal action to stop it.
