Austin traffic among worst in nation
07:54 AM CDT on Thursday, June 19, 2008
Austin's horrific traffic woes are now getting national attention. A Washington state-based company called Inrix released a study Tuesday of the American cities with the worst congestion in the country.
The data, collected from G.P.S. from almost a million cars and trucks nationwide shows that Austin has the two worst exits, causing bottlenecks in the entire state of Texas. According to Inrix, the worst exit in Texas is at southbound I-35 and Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard. The second worst is northbound I-35 and Riverside Drive.
"I did come from Houston, and it's a little better than Houston" said Sarah Blaine, an out-of-town driver passing through Austin.
A spokesperson for Inrix says the company is hoping the data will enlighten city planners and state highway agencies across the country to do something about the growing trend.
According to Marcus Cooper, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Transportation, the agency doesn't have any plans to fix the mess on I-35 anytime soon, but he adds that TxDOT is a few weeks away from taking a closer look at the phenomenon.
"What we're doing is setting up a review process making plans for future work on I-35, but before we can get to that point of actually working to relieve the congestion there, we've got to build parallel corridors for traffic to be able to go to when we actually start the work on I-35,” he said.
