Wal-Mart submits new plans for Northcross store

Austin city leaders told KVUE News Friday that Wal-Mart officials have submitted a new site plan for a proposed store at Northcross Mall in North Austin.
The new plans call for a store that is 33,000 square feet smaller -- 186,000 square feet -- than the original proposal. The original plans called for a 219,000 square foot superstore.
City leaders expected Wal-Mart to submit new plans after new concerns were raised about traffic around the proposed Wal-Mart.
A study done months ago showed Wal-Mart would bring about 10,000 car trips a day to Northcross. But city leaders said other Wal-Mart's of similar size have drawn almost twice the expected amount of cars.
"When we actually counted the real world traffic counts of the Ben White Wal-Mart, they showed traffic counts twice as high as their own formulas suggested when they submitted that to the city," said Brewster McCracken, Austin City Council.
Austin officials say Wal-Mart calculated traffic just as the city requested.
