10:55 AM CDT on Friday, May 9, 2008
Voters in municipalities across Central Texas make their voices heard Saturday.
In Austin, three city council seats and a multi-million dollar school bond package are on the ballot.
In City Council Place 1, Incumbent Lee Leffingwell faces off against Allen Demling and Jason Meeker.
There is a bitter battle for Place 3 between Incumbent Jennifer Kim, Randi Shade and Kenneth Weiss.
Six candidates are vying for the Place 4 seat to replace outgoing Council member Betty Dunkerly: Robin Cravey, Jennifer Gale, Cid Gallindo, Laura Morrison, Sam Osemene and Ken Vasseau.
Austin voters also must decide whether to pass $344 million worth of school bonds to make additions and renovations to various campuses in Austin ISD.
The bond package is broken up into three parts:
-- Proposition 1 -- $188 million -- would pay for high school science lab renovations and additions to meet the new state requirements, and it would also make technology upgrades and address overcrowding.
-- Proposition 2 -- $74 million -- is for health, safety and other renovations.
-- Proposition 3 includes a district-wide performing arts center, land for a south high school and renovations at Anderson High School.
