Council candidate's calls questioned
09:20 PM CDT on Monday, May 5, 2008
Law enforcement groups waded into the bitter back-and-forth for Austin City Council Place 3, after they were the subject of a robocall from the Jennifer Kim campaign.
Anonymous robocalls from "your neighbor Lisa" started late last week. The call alleged council candidate Randi Shade promised law enforcement funding for more positions. Both the law enforcement groups and Shade deny any promises were ever made.
"The comment from this mysterious Lisa is also a lie. It's making a claim that I promised something that I did not ever promise," Shade told KVUE.
Law enforcement groups called a press conference Monday afternoon, to rebuke the Kim campaign's claims.
"This is really low. And as I said the citizens deserve better. The citizens deserve to be told the truth in a campaign," said George Vanderhule, president of the Austin Police Association.
Kim's campaign was not sourced in the original robocall, but admitted it was behind the calls after being pressed by media over the weekend. Kim declined an interview with KVUE Monday, saying by text message she was feeling ill.
"I stand by the previous statements and if there's new information that comes to light we'll take a look at it and see," said Kim consultant Elliott McFadden.
Shade has other questions about the calls. Texas Public Utility Commission statute requires automated robocalls to cite their origin and affiliation. The Kim call did not.
“It seems that these were definitely illegal, and we know that they were false," Shade said.
Kim's consultant maintains the campaign did not break the law, but perhaps made a "technical violation".
“If there's a technical error in PUC guidelines, then we'll take care of it," McFadden said.
Both the law enforcement groups and the Shade campaign are considering formal complaints to the PUC. Early voting ends Tuesday, and election day is Saturday, May 10th.
