A former UT football player is arrested on Lake Travis. Police say Cedric Benson, 25, was boating with about a dozen people Saturday night when police pulled his boat over for a random safety inspection. Officers say Benson, who is now a running back for the Chicago Bears, was behind the wheel and had been drinking.

He's a celebrity, thought he could get away with everything I guess. I mean, sometimes they believe they're above the law, said Lake Travis boater, Tom Concienne.

According to the incident report Benson "refused to put on a life jacket."

Officers conducted a field sobriety test on the water and Benson failed. Thats when officers decided they needed to take him to shore to do more sobriety tests but Benson refused. The officers resorted to using pepper spray to subdue him.

"I think that's pretty ridiculous. When you can't handle yourself like that, just making a big scene and everything. That should be taken care of," said Lake Travis boater, Matt Costello.

Officers say they had to call for back up to remove Benson from the LCRA police boat. They say Benson was still resisting. According to the arrest report, officers had to carry and drag him to the deputy car.

Just another spoiled athlete he believes he's above the law. Unfortunately they are subject to laws and they have to follow them as well. If they're not, they should get arrested, said Lake Travis boater, Tom Rajan.

Benson was taken to the Travis County jail. Officers say he refused a breathalyzer test there too.

LCRA police say no other football players were identified as passengers on the boat. No one else was arrested. Police have already made two arrests on Lake Travis this year for boating while intoxicated. Benson is out on a $14,500 bond.
