Travis County earns 'D' in ozone pollution report

The American Lung Association Thursday released its annual air quality report, and two Texas cities are ranked in the top 10 for ozone pollution.

The State of the Air report ranked areas by three kinds of pollution: short-term particle pollution, year-round particle pollution and ozone pollution. Ozone can cause health problems including asthma attacks, coughing, wheezing, chest pain and even premature death.

Houston was ranked fourth and Dallas seventh in the nation of cities polluted by ozone. But the ozone problem is not confined to those Texas cities. Travis County earned a "D" when it comes to ozone pollution.

Hays County earned an "A." Williamson County was not listed.

According to the Lung Association, Pittsburgh is the first city outside of California to top the one of the most polluted lists -- short-term levels of particle pollution, which includes ash, soot, diesel exhaust, chemicals, metals and aerosols.

“The air quality in several cities has improved, but in others, declines in pollution have stalled. The trends tell us loud and clear that we need to do more to protect Americans from breathing air that’s simply hazardous to their health,” said Bernadette Toomey, president and CEO of the American Lung Association, in a news release. “If we were to measure the number of unhealthy days against the new ozone standard, it would show that ozone pollution is worse than the report indicates. Even with these stricter ozone standards, Americans are being denied the health protection they deserve under the Clean Air Act.”

The report also found that one in 10 people live in an area with at least one kind of unhealthy air pollution.
