2 former frat members to serve jail time for hazing
06:21 PM CDT on Monday, April 28, 2008
Four former members of a UT fraternity will serve probation, and two will do jail time, in connection with hazing after the death of a pledge in 2006. All belonged to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
The investigation began after Tyler Cross fell to his death from a balcony at the UT Towers in November 2006. His blood-alcohol content was higher than the legal limit at the time.
Authorities did not find that hazing lead to Cross's death, but they found evidence that the crime of hazing was going on within the fraternity.
"This type of activity won't be tolerated. There are other ways to gain membership into an organization and build that bonding than break the law," said Travis County Attorney David Escamilia.
Former SAE president, Chase Bolding and pledge trainers Austin Sherrill and Will Evans were sentenced for hazing and providing alcohol to minors in the fall semester of 2006.
Escamilia sited reports of shocking pledges with a cattle prod, throwing darts against a board into a pledge's hand.
It all happened around the time when pledge Tyler Cross died after he fell from a five story balcony, shortly after leaving the SAE house.
Sherrill and Evans will go to jail for the crime.
"We went after the pledge trainer because it's the pledge trainers that are in more direct contact with the pledges. Part of their job description is to protect the pledges," Escamilia said.
Former Vice President Jimmy Berry will serve probation for witnessing the hazing.
All sentences are a first for Travis County. It's something Escamilia hopes will have an impact here at the UT campus.
Students aren't so sure.
"As a member of a fraternity its not going to stop them from hazing. It's going to happen no matter what," Cody Schultz, UT fraternity member.
"Hazing has always been something that happens, whether it's out in the open or behind closed doors," Megan Lewis.
Escamilia says he's in it for the long haul.
"We are using a progressive type of punishment. Were escalating that with each serious case we get until they finally get the message."
“The national headquarters takes all allegations against our members or our chapters seriously. We have worked with both university officials and local alumni to make sure our chapter at UT-Austin is meeting our expectations and guidelines for chapter operations," said Brandon E. Weghorst, Director of Communications, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, in a statement. "Sigma Alpha Epsilon has a zero tolerance policy on hazing, and we support actions taken against individuals who may violate that policy.”
