U.T. student arrested for having a gun on campus
10:30 PM CDT on Tuesday, April 15, 2008
University of Texas Police say an anonymous tip on a hotline set up after last year's massacre at Virginia Tech has led to the arrest of a U.T. student who's charged with bringing a gun onto campus.
Court documents show that 20-year old Jason Liao told friends who saw him with a semi-automatic weapon that he was "on a mission."
U.T. Police Chief Robert Dahlstrom says it's not clear if Liao's arrest prevented any sort of tragedy on the U.T. campus. "We made the arrest and got the gun and those are the most important things" said Chief Dahlstrom.
Liao was arrested without incident early Tuesday morning at Plucker's restaurant on Rio Grande in West Campus.
Liao's friends and roommates say he's a harmless, gangster wannabe who got caught up in Chinese movies depicting gangs.
“Yeah, it's really bad when a student has a gun on campus, I wouldn't like it even if he's my friend but, I didn't like the fact but they're making it seem like it's Virginia Tech or Columbine all over again and they don't have the facts they don't know him" said Luis Gomez, a friend of Liao's.
Liao is charged with unlawfully bringing a weapon into a prohibited place. If convicted he faces 2 to 10-years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.00
