Akins teacher on leave after allegations arise
06:39 PM CDT on Monday, April 7, 2008
Akins High School officials have sent out a letter to parents that an arrest warrant was issued Friday for one of the faculty members.
Randy Arias was accused of having an improper relationship with a student.
The news drew mixed reactions from parents.
"I've seen things going on with other schools, and I'm not surprised that it happened here too," said Maria Howard, parent.
According to the letter, Arias was placed on administrative leave during the AISD police investigation
"Because the matter is now a criminal investigation, and because the student involved is a minor, there is not a great deal more information that I can provide at this time," Daniel Girard, principal, stated in the letter. "This is both a very serious and an embarrassing situation for Akins High School, but should not, in any way, reflect negatively on the hard work and dedication that our students and staff exhibit every day."
The case is pending with the Travis County District Attorney's Office.
