Heavy rains prompt flooding fears
08:33 PM CDT on Tuesday, March 13, 2007
More rain soaked the Austin area Tuesday afternoon, just days after another set of storms caused creeks and rivers to flood, prompting concerns that those creeks and river could flood again.
KVUE Storm Team Meteorologist Mark Murray said tornados and hail were not of as much concern as the amount of rain, which could easily flood the ground.
Some areas had already received up to 8 inches of rain Monday morning, and rivers were already full or at flood stage.
Meteorologists expected the thunderstorms to continue throughout the evening in and around Austin, bringing frequent lightning, small hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph.
The first round of storms began hitting downtown Austin just before 2 p.m. Within about a half hour, Waller Creek was raging.
Drivers should be warned that low lying places that normally flood could become death traps. Authorities are uging people not to cross any flooded area. Remember: Turn around, don't drown.
Sunday night, at least two people drowned when their vehicles were washed from Central Texas roads by flash floodwaters.
A search helicopter found the body of Mary Rachel Quest, 24, of Lubbock Monday morning after the car she was in was swept from a road into Geronimo Creek north of Seguin. The body of Gloria Schirk, 53, of Canyon Lake was found in Rebecca Creek after the car she was in was washed from Farm Road 306, about 35 miles north of San Antonio.
The deluge of water caused flooding at both Waller Creek and Shoal creek overnight. Heavy rain also flooded creeks, streams, culverts and underpasses across town.
In Lockhart, firefighters spent hours rescuing people stranded when their cars flooded out. They also helped a woman and child get out of their home when floodwaters rushed in.
At the height of the storm, firefighters say water was over almost every road in town. A couple of people were taken to the hospital for observation, but no serious injuries were reported.
Dozens of roads in Williamson County also had to be closed because of high water Monday. For updated road closure information, check the county website at www.wilcogov.org .
The wet weather is helping Central Texas' water supply. Just a couple of weeks ago the area was close to mandatory water restrictions.
"Nobody wants to have to be restricted we want to be able to use water for recreation and care of our yards if we don't have to face the restrictions that's great," said Shellie Egger, Manor resident.
Few people are rejoicing more about the rain falling than the folks who make a living on Lake Travis. The most recent estimates show that Lake Travis has risen at least four-feet.
And lake levels continue to rise.
Johnnie Marable, the owner of Johnny Fins on Lake Travis was worried about how he was going to make it through March. Now he says the recent rains will help him stay open through the summer.
The floating restaurant and bar sees most of its customers coming in by boat from the lake. But up until a few days ago, the water was so low that people had to be brought in by ferry.
But a dramatic rise in lake levels doesn’t mean water lovers will be flocking to the water immediately.
“With the water coming up so fast, with the debris and everything else in the water, there might have to be a clean up,” said Marable. “But within the next week or so, we should see a significant change.”
A significant change in business, too.
“For a while, we didn't know what we were going to do staff-wise and stuff like that,” he said. “Now, it's like whenever the water level comes up, business is going to be great. Business is going to be booming and we're going to have a great summer.
Despite the rain, Central Texas is still facing a drought. Experts say it’s going to take a lot more rain to fill the lakes back up to their normal levels.
