Stephanie Groh is the proud mother of twins.

“I used to complain I didn't have time to work on things, now I really don't have time,” said Groh with a laugh.

Groh wanted a nanny to help out and found one through an agency. But by the third day, it wasn't working.

“I guess in my view if you're a professional nanny you're not waiting to get instruction. You are somewhat intuitive, if you hear children crying to assist. Something told me that day that I'd made the wrong choice,” she said.

She said the company won't refund her money and she learned her options are limited because Texas doesn't have an agency that licenses or regulates nanny businesses.

“I investigated small claims court and was getting ready to go to small claims court when something told me to file a complaint with the better business bureau,” said Groh.

A different nanny agency here Austin, Mom's Best Friend, which has dozens of clients, said there are key things every parent should do before hiring a nanny: always double check those references and make sure there's a clear contract detailing expectations.

“We've found it gets rid of any of the unnecessary disagreements or misunderstandings that may happen and sets the expectations from the beginning,” said Candice Durden.

Placement fees can be expensive, so know your options when it comes to refunds before you sign - and get copies of those background checks.

Mom's Best Friend, unlike other agencies, does ongoing monitoring of their nannies.

Groh still wants to see change.

“I want to do what ever I can to create some type of licensing agency or some board that can regulate how these agencies operate,” Groh said.

She’s hoping no other mother goes through what she did to find the right nanny.
