Boy's death believed to be an accident
08:27 PM CST on Thursday, February 14, 2008
Austin police Thursday said physical evidence and statements indicated that the death of a 7-year-old boy, who was found hanging unconscious on a hook at a North Austin charter school two weeks ago, was accidental.
Tevin Park-Flowers was rushed to Dell Children's Medical Center Wednesday January 30, after he was found at NYOS (Not Your Ordinary School) Charter School in North Austin. He died two days later.
Lt. Mark Spangler, with the Austin Police Department, told KVUE News that APD has spent hundreds of man hours investigating the case and that it was extremely difficult because there were no witnesses.
Police said there was no evidence that Park-Flowers was assaulted -- sexually or otherwise -- or that he intended to end up on the hook.
Investigators believe the child accidentally placed himself in the position and could not get down. They also believe he was there for less than five minutes before a teacher found him.
Police say all other students were accounted for at the time, and they are continuing to conduct follow up interviews.
Park-Flowers was found hanging by his shirt from a coat hook in a locker room bathroom. Friends said he was a quiet child and an athlete who loved his twin brother and older sister. He also played football, and his team won the state championship last year.
In addition to the Austin police investigation, the school hired an independent investigator to look into the boy's death. Child Protective Services is also investigating.
