AUSTIN -- Friends and family were to remember Tevin Park-Flowers, 7, Friday at a public viewing at King Tears Mortuary. But it was also a day for the school to answer questions from parents about how to deal with the tragedy and how the school is moving forward to make sure this doesn't happen again.

School officials met with the parents of many students at NYOS charter school in a closed door meeting that lasted nearly two hours Friday morning. Officials told KVUE News that the mood was one of grief in the gymnasium, with many parents asking how they should talk with their children about the tragedy.

Tevin was found unconscious in a school locker room on January 30, hanging on a hook by his shirt. A teacher started CPR, but police say the shirt had cut off his air supply. He died two days later.

The school went over a list of ideas and safety measures that the school is putting in place so this doesn't happen again.

“We explained the safety changes we have made since the incident, we began a discussion about creating a safety committee, we introduced our internal investigator, Sara Leon, to the parents, and we announced that ongoing counseling continues to be available to teachers, students and families.” said Susana Hildebrand, an official at the school.

Since the incident took place, 25 students from 15 families have left the school.

Funeral services will be Saturday at Mt. Zion Church Baptist Church.

A memorial fund has been set up. Donations can be made to the Tevin Flowers Rising Stars Memorial Fund at Velocity Federal Credit Union.
