Rattlesnakes visit State Capitol

11:42 AM CST on Monday, February 4, 2008

KVUE News

The State Capitol had some unusual visitors Monday morning.

The Sweetwater Jaycees brought rattlesnakes to the Rotunda in the Capitol Extension to demonstrate the techniques used to handle rattlesnakes.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the "World's Largest Rattlesnake Roundup" in Sweetwater, Texas.

The project was conceived by a group of farmers and ranchers hoping to rid the town of the rattlers that were plaguing them and their livestock.

Now the Jaycees teach others how to handle and stay safe around the snakes.

"When you see a rattlesnake, we don't want you to run or move about. Basically just freeze," said Gene Bartlett, Sweetwater Jaycee.

The roundup is held annually on the second weekend in March at the Nolan County Coliseum in Sweetwater.
