City creates live music task force
07:37 AM CST on Friday, February 1, 2008
City leaders created a live music task force Thursday to help Austin live up to its claim as the "Live Music Capitol of the World."
Mayor Will Wynn says he's concerned that Austin has lost too many live music venues over the years. That's why he wants the task force to explore ways to increase that number. Wynn says that goal could be reached in a number of ways including possible tax breaks and discounts on energy bills. City officials say Austin's music industry is responsible for nearly 19,000 jobs and has nearly a billion dollar economic impact on the city.
"I think we need to remind ourselves how important music is to us," says Wynn. "As we rebuild downtown, why isn't there a live music venue built into every parking garage? Why isn't there a real judicious effort about districts?"
Local musican Troy Dillinger, who founded the goup the Year of Austin Music, supports the idea. He says less people are supporting live music which has driven down income for musicians.
"The living wage of an Austin musician is lower now than it has been in 40 years," says Dillinger, who added that many bands average only $50 to $100 dollars per show during the week.
The task force will also address noise issues between venues and nearby residents. Recently some neighbors have clashed with venues over how loud the music can be played.
The task force, which will be appointed by city council members, will report back to the council in 9 months.
