Five babies, six months later
06:42 PM CST on Thursday, January 31, 2008
It's been six months since a Cedar Park woman gave birth to a record-breaking set of quintuplets. During that time, a lot has changed for the newly-expanded family.
One of the first things you'll notice is how much the Wilkinson quints have grown. Several of babies have already tripled in size. They’ve also dismissed the overnight nannies.
On the tail end of nap-time, things inside this Wilkinson’s Cedar Park home are calm and quiet. When the babies wake up, it's time to get moving.
“We kind of have a rotating schedule of eat, play, and then sleep throughout the day,” said Rachelle Wilkinson, the quintuplets’ mother.
Wilkinson says the time flies.
“I've kind of been counting down the half-way to a year mark,” said Wilkinson.
The Cedar Park quints -- Kaydence, Kassidy, Kyndall, Rustin and Ryder -- turned six months old on Thursday.
“In a baby's life, 6 months is huge,” said Wilkinson. Although she still follows a strict schedule, carefully documenting feedings, she says a lot has changed.
“They've definitely gotten a lot bigger and they've started to become a lot more fun. They're a lot more interactive. They play with us, they play with each other. They're very smiley; they laugh and giggle,” said Wilkinson.
Another important milestone -- they're sleeping through the night.
“It's been a little less than two weeks ago that we said goodbye to the night nannies and took over for ourselves,” said Wilkinson.
The family still needs anywhere from two to five "helpers" during the day to care for the quints.
Betty Ann Curtis, the babies' grandmother, is here a couple of weeks a month and has watched them grow.
“They finally noticed they had somebody else next to them and they smile at each other and play with each other and smack each other,” said Curtis.
Wilkinson is looking forward to the next six months.
“They roll, they're learning how to sit up so I know that crawling is just around the corner and that's a pretty scary thought,” said Wilkinson.
The quints weigh between 11 and 15 pounds each, up from their birth weights which ranged from about three to five pounds.
