Pro-life rally held at capitol
10:20 PM CST on Saturday, January 26, 2008
A peaceful pro-life march met opposition at the state capitol from counter protestors on the week of the anniversary of Roe vs Wade.
Thousands marched to the Texas Capitol Saturday afternoon. The pro-life supporters came from across the state. Myra Myers was one of them.
"Everyday we experience the equivalent of 9-11 with the loss of the children, the citizens and the wounding of the mothers, fathers, and families,” said Myers.
Myers has been fighting with other pro-life supporters for 34 years to end abortion, but she wasn't always pro-life. In 1973 when the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in Roe v. Wade, Myers had an abortion.
"About a week after abortion was legalized, my husband said there's only one thing to do with our sixth conception. We both believed that since it was legal it must be okay, because afterall it's not supposed to be a baby yet," said Myers.
An estimated 48-million women like Myers chose to have an abortion since that ruling. However, now, Myers says she regrets that decision.
"I felt a crushing weight of guilt and grief and with that weight I knew, ‘Oh God, I've murdered’," said Myers.
The rally ended with the release of 35 white doves, representative of each year abortion was legalized. Yet, the mostly peaceful rally got heated when a handful of pro-choice supporters showed up with their own banners and signs. There were also protestors at the rally searching for a middle ground.
“We're holding up signs asking for moderation and people come up and say you must be a heathen and you must be making choices that are disrespectful and immoral,” said Ari Schulman.
In Austin there are at least half a dozen listed clinics that perform abortions, and according to the Texas Department of State Health Services, there were more than 82,000 abortions in Texas in 2006.
Some of the pro-life supporters at the rally on Saturday talked about informing the public. The group wants to incorporate ultra sound technology into their message; hoping images will help women make a more informed decision.
