Snow reported across Austin area

Sleet and freezing rain switched over to snow before noon Tuesday in some areas of Central Texas, prompting many people to venture outside for a look. The snow came after hours of ice collected on roads, cars and vegetation.

Snow began to fall around central Texas Tuesday morning.
The icy roads have claimed at least two lives in Central Texas. Hays County officials say two people are dead after an accident involving two 18-wheelers and one car. The accident involving two 18-wheelers and one car closed two southbound lanes of I-35 at marker 220. Another accident blocked southbound lanes at Parmer and I-35. Austin Emergency Management officials say five 18-wheelers spun out of control. The accident was cleared after several hours.
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Central Texas through Wednesday afternoon. Sleet and freezing rain have been falling this morning across much of our area. With temperatures already below freezing, much of this is sticking to roads. Trucks continue to sand bridges and overpasses as wet, freezing weather holds the area in its grasp.
Much of Travis and surrounding counties saw a minor icing Monday, but ice accumulation increased overnight as precipitation fell and temperatures dropped below freezing.
TxDoT road crews continued to refill their sand trucks and return to problem areas. TxDoT has 85 trucks treating roads in 11 Central Texas counties.
As a rule, highway crews hit heavily-traveled metropolitan areas first. Elevated locations are always the most treacherous. You are encouraged to stay at home, but if you must travel, highway officials suggest avoiding overpasses and elevated highways.
Williamson County sent out its own road crews to elevated spots that are known to ice over. All along Interstate 35, there were minor accidents, keeping emergency crews busy.
"It's a combination of the ice and drivers not paying attention to what they're doing, and speed as well," said Jeff Gogolewsi, an officer with the Round Rock Police Department.
Since midnight Austin-Travis County EMS officials reported crews responded to 81 collisions, including a potentially critical accident at South Lakeline Boulevard in Northwest Austin where a car slammed into a pole.
Since midnight Tuesday, Travis County paramedics also reponded to at least 20 "slip and fall" incidents, where victims have fallen on the ice. Several of the incidents have resulted in injuries requiring ambulance transport to hospitals. Some of the injuries were potentially serious.
"It was really slippery as I was walking, and I should've just turned around and walked back in," said Susan Anderson, who slipped on the ice.
Brackenridge Hospital officials said most people brought to the emergency room Wednesday were hur falling on patches of ice. A spokesperson for seton told KVUE people seem to be heeding warnings to stay off the road, but they are not staying off their feet.
It has been rough going for some passengers at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Passengers are being urged to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport. If the weather does deteriorate, crews and equipment are on standby to start de-icing planes if necessary. So far dozens of flights have been cancelled for Tuesday.
According to Austin Energy, at its peak, about 60 customers were without power at 9:30 a.m. Austin Energy repair crews were working on all outages. The outages all required tree trimming first to remove tree limbs that either broke into lines or were pressing across lines. There were no lines downed overnight or Tuesday. Austin Energy had 29 repairs crews and 23 tree trimming crews in service. By Tuesday afternoon, only four customers remained without power.
For those who lose power, Austin Energy says the best thing for you to do is to call 322-9100. When prompted, put in your powerlink number -- that's the number if the upper right hand corner of your bill. Austin Energy says that will automatically put your address into their computer system and that will get a crew to your area much faster than if you wait to talk to an operator.
