"It could be things like going to things like “great streets” which are nice wide sidewalks with street trees like 2nd Street or would it be to preserve historic buildings," said Erica Leak of the Austin Neighborhood Planning and Zoning.

The city launched the online survey last week, which has nine questions. You start by selecting one of 11 downtown districts where you want to see change.

"Right now we're really trying to get into districts downtown and what people would like to see emphasized," said Leak.

It’s part of the city’s Downtown Austin Plan. About 250 people have responded so far, ranking the core of Austin near 6th Street and Congress  Avenue as priority one.

Josh Allen, Executive Director of 6ixth Street Austin, knows what he'd like to change:  : “There's no reason in the world why 6th Street couldn't be a 24 hour a day or at least 18 hour a day vibrant entertainment district.”

He wants to preserve 6th Street as a historical district and make it more pedestrian friendly.

“We're closing the streets down there every weekend so why not expand the sidewalks so you don't have to close the streets,” Allen said.

His opinion, and yours, will be handed over to a consultant group hired by the city.

“This is every citizen’s downtown, this is Austin's downtown we want people to be able to embrace it and say this is what I want," Leak said.

Consultants will meet with people in each district and then present an improvement plan to the city. Their research is costing the city more than $1.5 million.

The survey continues until January 22nd.
