COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- A helicopter has crashed into a field on the campus of Texas A&M University, killing one and injuring four others others.

The Army Blackhawk helicopter crashed near the Corps of Cadets field on the school’s College Station campus, according to Jason Cook, Vice President of University Relations.

Cook said the Army UH-60 Blackhawk had a crew of five on board, including four members of the Army National Guard and one member of the ROTC staff at Texas A&M who is a recent graduate.

Melissa Purl, spokeswoman for College Station Medical Center, said three men were taken to that hospital. All three were in critical condition. Another crash victim was at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, a spokesman said.

Officials did not release the names of the dead and injured.

No current A&M students were involved in the crash.

Dave McDermond, with The Eagle newsaper in Bryan, got this photo of the Blackhawk crashing.

The helicopter, along with 190 cadets in the university's Corps of Cadets, were participating in the ROTC Winter Field Training Exercises taking place at the university.

Witnesses told The Eagle that the choppers had been taking off and landing when the crash happened.

“There was a bunch of people on Duncan Field and everyone went running and diving for cover,” Scot Walker told the paper. “I grabbed the phone and called 911.”

Walker is publications manager for the A&M Association of Former Students.

The chopper crashed on Duncan Field, which is adjacent to Duncan Dining Hall on George Bush Drive.

The Blackhawk that crashed originated from the Texas Army National Guard in Austin, according to Texas A&M spokesperson Lane Stevenson.

A&M students are still on holiday and classes don't resume until next week.

College Station is about 100 miles northwest of Houston.
