Learn some lessons from the last ice storm

Icy weather is likely to hit Austin Sunday night and Monday morning.

The last ice storm in February of 2006 caused hundreds of car accidents.

In December 2005, icy roads helped cause more than 1,000 accidents in Austin in one day.

Two months later, another winter freeze helped cause 400 accidents in just a few short hours.

Austin highway enforcement Officer Bob Miljenovich says drivers make all the mistakes you would expect in icy weather leading up to an accident: driving too fast, braking suddenly, and not allowing enough distance.

But he says after the crash, the mistakes, for some, seem only to continue.

And it's a common mistake. You would normally think of that common mistake being made behind the wheel, but police say during the last ice storm, one of the big problems happened after the crash.

"We had multiple collisions in the same location," Miljenovich said.

He says drivers in those situations would on occasion slam into other drivers who had already slid on the ice, only causing a greater danger to drivers.

"If you do hit something, like a wall or another driver, one of things you want to do is get off the roadway as soon as possible," Miljenovich said.

He says it's not only for your safety, but also the safety of first responders.

"Exchange your information in the parking lot, as opposed to the side of the road," he says.

Miljenovich says it would be best if all people stayed home, but he knows it's not going to happen.

During extremely icy conditions, be sure to drive as slow as possible — 5 to 10 mph.

And of course, the most problematic areas during icy weather are bridges and overpasses.

So if you do have to drive, try to avoid those if you can.
