Laser treatment attacks aging down deep

Many people spend a lifetime trying to reverse the effects of aging. Now there's a brand new laser that promises to treat fine lines, discoloration, and elasticity all in one treatment. The laser is called Fraxel Re-Pair. It uses a CO2 laser similar to the one doctors have been using for years, but instead of peeling off a layer of skin, the new laser treats the tissue down deep.

Jeannie Diamond, 57, is looking for a solution for her sun-damaged skin.

“...discoloration, you lose elasticity, the wrinkling, and your skin has a leather-like consistency after a while,” said Diamond.

So she's trying out a new laser treatment called Fraxel Re-Pair, a CO2 laser similar to that of a laser peel, but without the risk of infection and the down time.

“When you look at skin aging, you look at pigmentation, you look at fine lines, and then you look at texture and elasticity of the skin -- and this addresses all three qualities of skin aging,” said Dr. Gregory Nikolaidis, a dermatologist at Westlake Dermatology.

First, he applies a numbing cream. Then, he begins the treatment.

“Essentially, what we do is we track it along the skin a number of times so with each pass, we're laying down little holes in the skin,” said Dr. Nikolaidis.

Instead of removing a layer of skin like traditional laser peels, Fraxel Re-Pair pokes tiny holes.

“We're creating little micro thermal zones of injury and we're laying down little tracks in the skin, so we're not treating the entire surface area, we're treating about 25-30 percent,” said Dr. Nikolaidis.

Nikolaidis says the laser removes damaged tissue beneath the skin's surface, resulting in tighter and smoother skin. The skin, itself, takes about 48 hours to heal.

“It's so numb that you can't feel the touch at all. I couldn't tell he was doing it,” said Diamond.

Diamond says she didn't feel any pain, and she's looking forward to a significant improvement.

“...expecting fabulous results,” said Diamond.

It may take several weeks to see optimal results, but the redness and swelling should subside after about a week.

Fraxel Re-Pair won't officially be launched until next month. It costs anywhere from $3,000 to $4,000, which is in line with traditional laser resurfacing.
