The report card is out on the state of the state's and the nation's infrastructure regarding roads, highways and bridges, and the grades are mediocre at best.

The American Society of Civil Engineers met at the Texas State Capitol Monday where a grade of "D" was given to the nation for roads, highways and bridges.  The state of Texas fared a little better with an overall “C-”.

"We said that it would take $1.3 trillion over 5 years to bring all of the infrastructure up to what would be considered an adequate level," says Wayne Klotz, with the American Society of Civil Engineers who estimated what it will cost to bring the nation's infrastructure up to par.

According to the civil engineers, Texas is doing better when it comes to bridges.  In a survey done in 2004, Texas bridges received a "C-".  In this latest report Texas bridges receive a "B-".

National and state leaders took a long, hard look at bridges after 13 people were killed in a bridge collapse in Minneapolis in August of 2007.

"Texas has more bridges than any other state in the country, we have more than 50,000 bridges statewide," says Chris Lippincott with TxDOT.

Lippincott says 1,000 people are still moving to Texas each day and the infrastructure has not been able to keep up.

TxDOT and civil engineers are appealing to state lawmakers to make the state's infrastructure a major priority when the legislative session begins next week.

"It's going to be a bumpy ride you're going to see more potholes, it's going to take us longer to maintain the roads that we've got unless we find new resources either at the state or federal level or from the private sector to help us pay for transportation," says Lippincott.
