Man's arm cut off after Manor industrial accident
11:35 AM CST on Thursday, January 3, 2008
MANOR -- Officials say a Manor concrete company worker who lost an arm in a conveyor Wednesday was stuck in the machine for 30 minutes before he could free himself.
A spokesman for Austin/Travis County Emergency Medical Services says the 52-year-old man was alone when he went to warm up equipment at Alamo Concrete before dawn.
That's when, according to EMS spokesman Warren Hassinger, the man's sleeve got caught in the works. The man's arm was cut off at the elbow, but Hassinger says it's unclear whether he cut it off to escape or it was cut off by the machinery.
The victim's name hasn't been released yet. Hassinger says he was taken to Brackenridge Hospital, where he's in critical but stable condition.
EMS officials say he was conscious and talking with them as they tended to him.
An Occupational Safety and Health Administration representative told KVUE News that OSHA will investigate the accident.
