NEW YORK (AP) — As a teenager, David Karp would canvass the streets of New York City's Upper West Side, offering to build websites for local businesses.
After his freshman year of high school, the savvy kid decided to drop out of high school altogether to devote more time to his passion for technology.
A few years later, Karp built the wildly popular blogging forum Tumblr from his childhood bedroom. And on Saturday, the 26-year-old returned home to inform his mother that Yahoo was buying Tumblr for $1.1 billion.
Mom Barbara Ackerman says "there were a few tears and lots of hugs."
Karp tells The Associated Press he still considers himself to be a green executive. But he's learning that he can no longer spend most of his time writing computer code.
