AUSTIN -- The city's new children's museum, the Thinkery, has gone green.
Freedom Solar Power has installed close to 200 solar panels onto the roof of the Thinkery in an effort to reduce the building's carbon footprint.
“The new solar panels allow the Thinkery to run at maximum energy efficiency and are a great learning tool to teach families about renewable energy,” said Executive Director of the Thinkery Mike Nellis. “We are grateful to partner with Freedom Solar Power and be a part of the sustainable community design in Mueller.”
The solar panels are expected to help the museum save $6,000. Eventually they will offset close to 2,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents, which are the same as 485 tons of waste going to the landfill or carbon dioxide emissions from 178 homes.
